THE PLACE
Assam, in the Brahmaputra valley, where a loom sits in nearly every home and weaving is not a trade apart from daily life but a part of it. Villages along the river have spun and woven cotton and silk for centuries, the region's humidity and its rhythm of festivals shaping when the loom runs and what it makes. This cluster works with A Weavers Nest by Susant Ji, a Northeast India collaborator bringing together artisans across the region's weaving communities.
THE WEAVE
Assam cotton handloom, a plain weave carried by an extra-weft technique where the border and the motifs are built into the fabric on the loom itself, never printed or embroidered afterward. The same skill that weaves a gamosa for a festival morning weaves the paar, the woven border, on a length meant for everyday wear. Each piece takes weeks of loom time between the warping, the extra-weft counting and the finishing.
THE THREAD
Pure cotton, alongside Muga, Eri and Mulberry silk from the same weaving communities. Natural fibres only, no synthetic substitutes, no chemical finishes. Muga carries its own natural gold sheen without a single dye, Eri is spun without harming the silkworm, and Mulberry brings the smooth ivory finish these households have always favoured for festive wear.
THE PATTERN
Motifs of flowers, vines and small geometric buttis woven directly into the body and the border, each one built thread by thread rather than stitched on top. The same techniques and motifs have been carried forward through generations of weavers, adapted village to village but never far from their root patterns. No two pieces from this cluster are exactly alike.
THE FAMILY
A Weavers Nest by Susant Ji works closely with weaving communities across Assam and the wider Northeast, sourcing textiles rooted in the region's culture and its natural fibres. The partnership exists to keep these techniques with the artisans who hold them, rather than letting the craft's identity dissolve into a generic "handloom" label.
