Surmai: Royal Katan Silk Kadhuwa Benarasi
By Naushad Ji
Saree Story
Surmai, they called me, for the smoky softness of kohl with a hidden blush of mauve. Move and I shift like a cloud deciding its colour, grey in stillness and rosy in every fold. Wavy zari lines trickle down my length like rain on a windowpane. My pallu blooms in deep plum, a tiled garden of zari flowers edged with rows of tiny blossoms and a rose pink selvedge. Understated and endlessly graceful, I let the one who wears me shine.
Handloom Perfection
Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.
Description
A pure katan silk Banarasi in dual-tone mauve grey, handwoven on the looms of Banaras. Fine wavy zari stripes run the length of a lustrous, colour-shifting silk canvas. The pallu in rich plum mauve features eight-petal zari florals set in a checkerboard with rudraksham lattice squares. Bands of floral roundels and geometric borders frame the pallu, finished with a slim rose pink edge. A sophisticated heirloom for festive evenings, receptions and elegant gatherings.

Fabric
Katan is pure mulberry silk woven with twisted silk filaments in warp and weft. This twist lends strength, a smooth hand and a rich natural lustre. The fabric drapes fluidly with a soft body and graceful weight. Its dense, even surface makes it the classic canvas for Banarasi zari work.

Care Instructions
Silk rewards patience. Dry clean for the first wash. After that, cold water and a gentle hand. Never wring it, never rush it. Dry in the shade — silk and sunlight are not friends. Iron on the reverse, low heat, while it is still slightly damp.
