Saree Story

The best poems don't explain themselves, they land in one line and stay there, and that's the kind of poetry I am. No elaborate verse, no metaphor stretched too thin, just magenta, direct and unrelenting, with gold scattered across me like a lilt that only poetry can give. They named me Kavya. I don't fade with retelling. I look just as good every time you reach for me.

Handloom Perfection

Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.

Description

Kavya doesn't build up to anything, she simply arrives. No border to soften her, no dense vine to distract from her, just a single, unrelenting magenta and small gold coins scattered across it like punctuation marks in a poem that already knew exactly what it wanted to say. The small round gold coin buttis are woven in the jamdani extra-weft technique, scattered across the body, with a striped magenta pallu border. Pure matka silk, spun from pierced cocoons, holds this colour with weight rather than shine, the kind of depth that doesn't fade into the background. One garment. Two authors.

Weaver

Some of the designs woven in Phulia today were woven before partition, in a village that no longer exists on any map. They crossed the border not in a suitcase but in the memory of the weavers who carried them. That is what you wear when you wear a Phulia saree. Not just cloth. A memory that survived.

Fabric

Handspun from pierced cocoons, Matka silk is prized for its natural texture, breathable comfort and understated elegance. Its distinctive grain and matte finish celebrate the beauty of handwoven silk in its most honest form.

Technique

Coin matka is woven using the jamdani extra-weft technique, the same hand-manipulated method used for floral and leaf buttis, but with the motif shaped into a small, dense circle rather than a leaf or flower. The weaver inserts extra weft threads by hand between the regular weft picks, working the coin shape thread by thread rather than through a mechanised jacquard punch.

Care Instructions

Silk rewards patience. Dry clean for the first wash. After that, cold water and a gentle hand. Never wring it, never rush it. Dry in the shade — silk and sunlight are not friends. Iron on the reverse, low heat, while it is still slightly damp.
