Saree Story

Kanchana's Story: I took more than two weeks to be born. Every golani butti was placed by hands that had spent decades at this loom. My gold and plum figures appeared one motif at a time, patient and precise, until they found their place across my body and border. I wear turmeric yellow the way a bride wears haldi, and Katan silk the way dawn wears light. If kingdoms once crossed rivers in search of gold, I like to believe they were looking for something that glowed like this.

Handloom Perfection

Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.

Description

Kanchana means pure gold in Sanskrit, the gold that does not dim, the gold that was worth crossing rivers and kingdoms for. This saree earns that name before it is even unfolded. The ground is a warm turmeric yellow, the colour of haldi smeared on a bride's skin and marigolds strung at temple gates, a yellow that seems to carry its own light from within. Across the body, rows of gold and plum figurative butti move in a density and confidence unlike anything quieter in this collection, each motif intricate with detail, each row a small procession of its own. At the border, a full gold narrative unfolds on the tonal ground, unhurried and certain. Katan silk does not need to announce itself. On the body it settles quietly, moves with you and catches light the way only a pure weave can. This is a saree that earns its occasion. Sourced directly from the looms of Bishnupur, Bankura. No middlemen, no blends, no shortcuts. Only the cloth and the hands that made it. One garment. Two authors.

Weaver

The weavers of Bishnupur learned from their fathers, who learned from theirs before them. Today their children sit at the same looms, coaxing gods and epics out of silk that has not changed in centuries. Each a masterpiece.

Fabric

Pure Katan Silk

Technique

Swarnachuri is woven on a jacquard loom using untwisted silk thread, where entire narrative scenes, gods, epics, courtly life, are built directly into the fabric. Not printed, not embroidered. Woven in, permanently, the way only a Baluchari weaver knows how. What makes this cluster's work extraordinary is its narrative scale, told across a single pallu with a precision that takes decades to master.

The thread behind it is pure Katan silk, sourced from Malda and Murshidabad. Finest Zari. The silk is degummed and dyed before it reaches the loom, ensuring the sheen and strength that defines true Bishnupur Katan.

Care Instructions

Silk rewards patience. Dry clean for the first wash. After that, cold water and a gentle hand. Never wring it, never rush it. Dry in the shade — silk and sunlight are not friends. Iron on the reverse, low heat, while it is still slightly damp.
