Chitra: Kattam Silk Cotton Kanjeevaram

Look at me closely and you will see nothing but small black and white squares, repeating without a single break until they meet my border. That grid is not an accident, it takes discipline on the loom to keep every check exact across the whole length. I am woven in silk cotton, so I carry the crispness of cotton and the sheen of silk without the weight of either alone. My border arrives like punctuation, a deep teal green worked in gold with rows of triangles and medallions marching along the edge. The join where my checks meet that border is done in korvai, two different sections locked together by hand, thread by thread, so the transition holds even after years of wear.
