Saree Story

Bela's Story: They call me Bela, after my mother, who never once asked a room to notice her. It simply did. That's the kind of strength I wanted woven into ivory, the kind that doesn't perform itself. My daisies stand tall and plain spoken, gold stemmed, self toned, certain of their own worth without needing to prove it. I don't reach for attention. It simply arrives. Wear me when you want to be exactly, quietly, undeniably yourself. I assure you I am for the keeps.

Handloom Perfection

Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.

Description

Bela does not compete with the room, she settles it. Her ivory carries barely any colour at all, and yet nothing about her feels bare. Tall daisies stand in unhurried rows on stems of gold, each bloom self-toned against the field so you notice her only if you look closely, and once you do, you don't stop. A woven gold pinstripe closes her pallu, the one place she allows herself to catch the light outright. Pure linen jamdani, structured enough to hold its own shape, soft enough to never announce itself. One garment. Two authors.

Weaver

Some of the designs woven in Phulia today were woven before partition, in a village that no longer exists on any map. They crossed the border not in a suitcase but in the memory of the weavers who carried them. That is what you wear when you wear a Phulia saree. Not just cloth. A memory that survived.

Fabric

Pure linen softens with every wash rather than wearing thin, ages the way good things do, and carries its own natural texture instead of hiding it.

Technique

The motifs aren't printed, embroidered, or jacquard-automated. Each motif is inserted by hand directly into the weave, using a fine bamboo needle or small stick (called a kandul), as the base cloth is being woven. This is why it's sometimes described as embroidery worked into the loom itself, rather than on top of finished cloth.

Saree with Blouse Piece

Regular-length sarees come with an unstitched blouse piece measuring 0.8 metre.

Care Instructions

Dry clean for the first wash to preserve the weave and natural finish. Thereafter, hand wash separately in cold water using a mild liquid detergent. Do not soak, bleach or wring. Dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight. Iron on medium heat while the saree is slightly damp or use steam. Store folded in a cool, dry place. Refold periodically to avoid permanent creases.
