Saree Story

Morning wears me first, pale and checked like the sky before the sun decides anything. Then the hour turns, and my edges deepen into the colour of grapes left too long in the sun, dusk arriving thread by thread. Every mayil chakram scattered across me is a small wheel of peacock feathers, spinning quietly in gold. My pallu carries the heaviest hour of all, dense and dark, worked in zari that catches whatever light is left. Drape me and you carry a whole day inside one length of silk.

Handloom Perfection

Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.

Description

A pure Kanjeevaram silk saree in kattam weave. The canvas is grey, ruled through with fine black checks and scattered with mayil chakram buttis in gold zari. The border and pallu shift into a deep aubergine-black, dense with fine zari, running through a lace-edge border and a richly worked pallu in paisley and jaal patterns.

Weaver

A community of master weavers and younger artisans in Kanchipuram, carrying forward a living heritage passed from one generation to the next, not in training centres but at the loom.

Fabric

Pure Kanjeevaram silk, kattam (checked) weave

Technique

This is a pure Kanjeevaram silk saree woven in the kattam style, the canvas ruled through in fine black checks against an off-white base. Scattered across the body are mayil chakram buttis, handwoven into the silk rather than embroidered or printed on afterward. The border and pallu shift into a deep aubergine-black, worked in the same fine zari that runs through the lace-edge border and the paisley and jaal patterns of the pallu. The zari used throughout is tested zari of fine quality.

Saree with Blouse Piece

Care Instructions

Silk rewards patience. Dry clean for the first wash. After that, cold water and a gentle hand. Never wring it, never rush it. Dry in the shade — silk and sunlight are not friends. Iron on the reverse, low heat, while it is still slightly damp.
