Shubhra: Fine Bengal Cotton with Statement Border
By Phulia's Padma Shri Cluster
Saree Story
I am Shubhra. I begin in cream and near-silence, a few black diamond butis placed like punctuation waiting for the sentence to arrive. Then the geometry begins, chevrons and triangles and arrows in row after row, each band distinct, the whole building toward a crescendo. My charcoal border holds its own counsel, layered and precise. My Bengal cotton keeps me light through long days, settling into the wearer like a quiet habit. I carry no colour but black and white and say more than most sarees do with ten.
Handloom Perfection
Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.
Description
Shubhra is a cream Bengal cotton that opens in quiet, scattered black diamond butis across the upper body, each one placed with the deliberateness of a full stop. Then the geometric bands arrive, row upon row of chevrons, triangles, dots and arrows in black, building across the lower body with the rhythm of something being written. The charcoal grey border carries its own layered resham motifs, detailed and unhurried. The knotted fringe at the hem falls in cream and black, the last mark on a saree that is essentially a composition.
Weaver
Days to make the saree
Every 100-count Phulia cotton saree takes around 8–12 days to complete. Fine cotton yarns demand patience at every stage—from preparing the warp to weaving each delicate pick by hand. What appears effortless when draped is the result of more than a week's work by artisans whose families have perfected this craft over generations.

Care Instructions
First Wash: Dry clean for the first wash to preserve the finish and the zari or resham border. Thereafter: Hand wash separately in cold water using a mild liquid detergent. Avoid soaking for long periods. Do Not: Use bleach, harsh detergents, or wring the saree aggressively, as fine-count cotton fibres deserve gentle handling. Drying: Dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight, to retain the richness of the colours. Ironing: Iron on a medium cotton setting while the saree is slightly damp, or use steam for the best finish. Storage: Fold neatly and store in a cool, dry place. If the saree has a zari border, wrap it in a soft muslin cloth and avoid storing it in plastic. Refold it occasionally to prevent permanent creases.
