Saree Story

I am Mihika and I am entirely gold, the kind that does not ask for your attention but holds it anyway. My cutwork jaal grows across every inch of me, flower into leaf into creeper, uninterrupted, unhurried, the weaver's way of saying something worth saying completely. I drape close to the body, not hovering away from it, pure tissue silk that follows your lines rather than imposing its own. I am lightweight enough to forget you are wearing me and gold enough that no one else will. The woman who wears me does not need to try. She simply needs to arrive.

Handloom Perfection

Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.

Description

Mihika is a golden pure tissue Banarasi with an all-over cut work jaal covering every inch of her body in flowering vines, leaves and creepers. The gold lives inside the weave, the pure tissue fabric and the jaal existing in the same register of warmth, one deepening the other. The layered gold zari border carries oval motifs and chevrons, structured and precise against the abundance of the jaal above it. Pure tissue silk drapes without argument, settling against the body like a second skin rather than sitting away from it. She is woven sunlight, the kind that has no single source and no single hour.

Weaver

In the handloom neighbourhood of Varanasi, where generations of weaving families have shaped the silk heritage, National Award-winning master weaver Abu Talib Ansari Ji brings the intricate tissue Banarasis to life, revealing the skills that have defined his family’s craft for generations.

Fabric

Woven in pure tissue, this Banarasi holds light as though it were part of the weave itself. Its luminosity does not sit on the surface. It rises softly from within. It settles close to the body like a second skin, never stiff, never poufy, never excessive.

Technique

The all-over flowering jaal is created using the cutwork technique, where the supplementary gold thread is cut between motifs rather than carried across the back of the fabric. This gives the jaal a clean, precise finish on the reverse and allows the dense all-over coverage of flowers, leaves and creepers to cover the entire canvas without the weight that continuous floats would add. Cutwork on tissue is among the most delicate executions in Banarasi weaving, the sheerness of the ground leaving no room for imprecision.

Care Instructions

Silk rewards patience. Dry clean for the first wash. After that, cold water and a gentle hand. Never wring it, never rush it. Dry in the shade — silk and sunlight are not friends. Iron on the reverse, low heat, while it is still slightly damp.
