Nilanjana: Pure Katan Rangkat Benarasi
By Nurul Ji
Saree Story
Call me Nilanjana, the one who wears blue like kohl and never explains why. My stripes move through periwinkle, slate blue and violet, four soft bands held apart by threads of gold that never let one colour spill into the next. Anyone watching would think I am the quiet sort, evenly toned and content to stay in the background. Then my pallu arrives in magenta, a field of gold blossoms so dense it looks like the sky finally lost an argument with sunset. My border keeps the same magenta running my full length, gold florals holding their shape stripe after stripe. I let people believe I am calm right up until the moment I prove otherwise.
Handloom Perfection
Handloom sarees are made by human hands, not machines. Which means every piece carries the natural variations of the loom and the weaver, proof that someone, somewhere, made this just for you.
Description
Nilanjana moves in cool tones first, four bands of periwinkle, slate blue and violet dividing her body in even rhythm, each one framed by a fine border of gold botanical work. Just when the eye settles into her composed palette she turns, and her pallu opens into a rich magenta canvas dense with a woven gold floral jaal. The same magenta lines her border throughout, gold flowers marching steadily along both edges. She holds two moods at once, composed through the body and radiant at the fall, without ever feeling like two different sarees.

Fabric
Woven in pure silk with a smooth, structured drape, this Banarasi carries enough body to hold the rangkat stripes crisp and the gold zari raised. It is neither too sheer nor too heavy, settling into soft folds at the pallu while staying firm and true through the striped body.
Technique
Saree with Blouse Piece
Full length saree with unstitched blouse piece, approx. 0.8 metre
Care Instructions
Silk rewards patience. Dry clean for the first wash. After that, cold water and a gentle hand. Never wring it, never rush it. Dry in the shade — silk and sunlight are not friends. Iron on the reverse, low heat, while it is still slightly damp.
